WordPress or a custom website: how to choose for a small business
By Lacina DraboPublished on

You have received two quotes: one proposes a WordPress website, the other a "custom" website built with Next.js or React. Both providers defend their choice, and you do not know which one to believe.
I build both. Among the projects presented on this website, Escale Elite, Landed.eu and Ione Aménagement are built on WordPress; this website, on the other hand, is custom-built with Next.js. Neither is better in absolute terms: the right answer depends on your situation. Here are the four questions that settle it.
The real question: who will keep the website alive?
This is the question that matters most, and the one that is asked least.
- If your team publishes often, on its own (news, offers, product pages, articles), it needs a simple administration interface. That is WordPress's strength: you add a page or an article without touching the code.
- If the website rarely changes, or if your provider handles the updates, the administration interface matters less. A custom website can also be connected to an editing tool, but it is not automatic, and it has to be planned from the start.
When WordPress is the right choice
- You want to publish and edit your content yourself, without depending on a developer.
- The website is standard: presentation pages, blog, contact form.
- A feature you need already exists as a reliable plugin (appointment booking, multilingual, simple store).
- Your initial budget is tight and the website needs to go live quickly.
Points to watch: each plugin added is one more element to update, and a possible source of slowness or vulnerability. A WordPress website requires regular maintenance, which is part of its real cost.
When a custom website is justified
- Loading speed, especially on mobile, is a direct commercial issue.
- The design must be genuinely unique, not adapted from a theme.
- The website includes specific features: calculations, personalized journeys, connection to your internal tools.
- The project is meant to evolve into an application.
Points to watch: without a planned administration interface, every content change goes through a developer; the initial cost is generally higher; and you need to make sure the code will be handed over to you.
Performance and SEO: what really changes
SEO does not depend on the tool, but on what you do with it. A well-built WordPress website ranks very well; a poorly structured custom website stays invisible.
What makes the difference in practice:
- The content must be present in the page sent by the server. This is the case for a standard WordPress website and for a Next.js website whose pages are generated in advance. It is not always the case for a React website that builds everything in the browser: Google then has to run the JavaScript to read the page.
- Speed depends on what is loaded. A WordPress website weighed down by a complex theme and dozens of plugins will be slow; the same website, kept lean and well hosted, will be fast. A custom website starts with an advantage, but can lose it in the same way.
- Structure matters more than technology: one page per service, clear titles, links between pages, readable addresses.
The cost over three years, not just the quote
Compare the total cost over three years, not just the build:
| Item | WordPress | Custom |
|---|---|---|
| Build | Often lower, especially from a theme | Generally higher |
| Content updates | Done by your team | Developer, unless an editing interface is planned |
| Technical maintenance | Regular (core, theme, plugins) | Lighter, but requires a developer |
| Specific improvements | Limited by the available plugins | No technical limit, at the cost of development |
For an existing website: migrate or optimize?
Changing technology is a complete redesign. Before leaving WordPress for a custom website, or the other way round, check that the problem really comes from the tool: a slow or invisible website can often be fixed without rebuilding everything. If the migration is decided, it is prepared like any redesign, protecting the addresses and content that already bring you results: the method is detailed in website redesign without losing SEO.
Decision table
| Your situation | Best-suited choice |
|---|---|
| You publish often, on your own, and the website stays standard | WordPress |
| Tight budget, quick launch | WordPress, with a lean theme |
| Speed and unique design are priorities | Custom |
| Specific features or connection to your tools | Custom |
| The website must evolve into an application | Custom |
The choice is made during scoping, based on your situation and not on the provider's preferences. It is the first step of the website design service I offer.
